Men's Swimming And Diving Earn All-Conference In 13 Events; Raiders Finish 2nd At OAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio - - Mount Union's men's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference men's swimming and diving championships at the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of The University of Akron.

Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) won both the 100 backstroke and the 500 free with times of 50.48 and 4:38.19 respectively.  Brocious set a meet record and earned an NCAA "B" cut qualification in the 100 backstroke. 

Brocious finished the longest event of the meet, the 1650 freestyle in first place and set a new school record in the process with a time of 16:20.12

Brocious was also part of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams that finished in second place and set school records with times of 1:33.18 and 3:25.58. Both relays earned NCAA "B" cut qualifications. 

The 200 medley relay was composed of senior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) and sophomore Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles) while the 400 medley relay team was composed of Ruhe, Zappa and sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep). 

Griesl won the 200 free and set a school record in the event with a time of 1:42.50.  

The 400 freestyle relay team of Brocious, Birnbrich, Zappa and Greisl finished second with a time of 3:05.59. 

Senior Ian Perry (Perry/Perry) dove to all-conference honors as he finished second in both the one meter and three meter diving events with scores of 336.65 and 300.30 respectively. 

Birnbrich, Greisl, Zappa and junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia) all swam in the 200 freestyle relay that finished in second place and set a school record with a time of 1:24.31.

Ruhe finished third in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststrokes with times of 59.70 and 2:10.92. 

Freshman Michael Branch (Las Vegas, Nev/Palo Verde) finished third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:17.13. 

Ohio Northern won the title with 985 points with Mount Union finishing second (749), John Carroll third (468), Wilmington fourth (409), Transylvania fifth (237) and Defiance sixth (10) to round out the six team field.
