Swimming and Diving Earn Team Scholar All-American Awards, Four Earn Individual Honors
ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union men's and women's swimming and diving teams were recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for their academic success this past year. The Purple Raiders not only earned team awards but four members earned Scholar All-American Honorable Mention awards; juniors Courtney Gabel (Fremont/Fremont Ross), Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) and sophomores Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep) and Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles).
The CSCAA Scholar All-American Team awards is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Raiders women's team combined for a 3.36 grade point average as the men's team combined for a 3.06 GPA.
The Scholar All-American are given out to individuals who achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, for the semester or cumulative average and achieve a "B" time standard.
An exercise science major with a GPA 3.80, Gabel was named Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Swimmer of the Year and holds the OAC record in the 50 and 100 free. She earned all-conference honors at the OAC Championships by finishing first in the 50 free, 100 free and the 100 breast and earned all-OAC honors as part of the 200 free relay.
A marketing major with a GPA of 3.35, Zappa earned all-OAC honors as a member of the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and the 400 free relay teams.
A sports business major with a GPA of 3.31, Birnbrich finished with top times in four events at the OAC Championships and earned all-OAC honors as of part of the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.
A business finance major with a GPA of 3.31, Ruhe earned individual all-OAC honors by finishing third in the 100 and 200 breast and earned all-OAC honors as part of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
