Men's Swimming and Diving Defeats Rival John Carroll in Conference Opener
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Mount Union men's swimming and diving defeated John Carroll, 162-79, in the opening of Ohio Athletic Conference meets on Friday evening.
The Purple Raiders were led by sophomore Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon) who took first place honors in three individual events.
Rundell won the 200-yard free (1:47.02), the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.52), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.30).
Also taking individual events for Mount Union was Tyler Moore (Amherst/Amherst) who took first in the 200 IM (2:04.51) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.75), and Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep) took first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.67).
The Raiders also won the 200 medley relay (1:42.70), with the team of Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange), Moore, Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit), and Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia). They also took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:30.80), with Birnbrich, Moreland, Melvin and Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby).
Mount Union (3-1) returns to the pool Friday, November 15 at 5 pm when they host St. Vincent (Pa.) at Hammond Natatorium in Alliance.
