Nick Fockler Sets Single-Season Doubles Mark as Men’s Tennis Tames Marietta

Nick Fockler (North Canton/Hoover)

MARIETTA, Ohio—Freshman Nick Fockler (North Canton/Hoover) won his school-record 18th doubles match of the season as the Mount Union men's tennis team defeated Marietta, 8-1, at the Beren Tennis Center on Monday.

The Purple Raiders (12-7, 5-3 OAC) won two of three doubles points before sweeping through singles play in their victory over the Pioneers.

Fockler broke the freshman record on Saturday and his 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with his brother, Nate Fockler (North Canton/Hoover), this afternoon gave him his 18th doubles victory of the season, surpassing Jeff McQuate (1999-00) for the single-season record. The Focklers are now 17-1 as a tandem on the season, and Nick also has a doubles win with Ben Swope (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin).

Drew LeGendre (Toledo/Bowsher) joined the Focklers as dual winners, picking up wins at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with Zach Nelson (Alliance/Marlington). Patrick Yackmack (Mantua/Twinsburg), Jeff Looker (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls), and Swope also had singles wins for the Raiders.

Mount Union can clinch a home match in the opening round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a win in the regular season finale against Wilmington on Saturday.
