SPRING SEASON PREVIEW- Men's Tennis Begins Spring Season Friday Against Westminster

Mount Union's men's tennis team begins its spring Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis season when it hosts Westminster Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the Petersen Field House.

The Purple Raiders finished the 2011-12 season with 13-6 overall record, went 6-3 in conference play and earned the number for seed in the OAC tournament.  

Sophomore Nick Fockler (North Canton/Hoover) led all Mount Union players with a 16-5 singles record and in doubles, Nick and his brother senior Nate Fockler (North Canton/Hoover) led the team with an 18-2 record. Their 18 wins in doubles ranked second in the conference.   

The Raiders enter the 2013 Spring Season having defeated Penn State-Behrend (8-1), Franciscan (7-2) and Thiel (9-0) in the three matches played in the fall.  

Mount Union dominated the competition in the fall season outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 24-3. 

In the singles matches, Mount Union had a combined record of 15-3 and was led by Nick Fockler, freshmen Josh Duerr (Uniontown/Lake) and Malcolm Leake (Fremont/Fremont Ross) who all went undefeated with 3-0 records. 

In the doubles matches, the Raiders never lost a match and had a combined record of 9-0. The Fockler brothers went 3-0 in the no. 1 doubles position, Leake and junior Patrick Yackmack (Mantua/Twinsburg) went 3-0 in the no. 2 doubles position, freshman Dominic Marino (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) and Duerr went 2-0 in the no. 3 doubles position and Marino and sophomore Ben Swope (North Huntingdon, Pa. /Norwin) went 1-0 in the no. 3 doubles position. 

Mount Union will play one other match before heading down South for its annual Spring Break trip. The first OAC match will be at Muskingum on Saturday Match 23rd at 1:00 p.m. 

Westminster finished the 2012 season with a 5-12 overall record and finished third at the PAC tournament. 

The last time the Raiders faced the Titans was in the 2011-12 season where Mount Union was victorious 8-1.
