AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Mount Union sophomore Robert Cross (North Canton/Hoover) and junior Gretchen Groves (Louisville/Louisville) were named Ohio Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for March 12.
Both Cross and Groves went undefeated in their singles and doubles matches during the team's spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.
Now 7-1 in singles, Cross defeated Frankie Fortunati (Catholic) 6-3, 6-0, John Miller 7-6, 7-5, 6-0 (St. John Fisher), Henry Siercke (Eastern Nazarene) 7-6, 5-7, 10-7, Jordan Heavel (Lebanon Valley) 6-0, 6-1, and Hale Breit (Nebraska Wesleyan) 6-0, 6-0.
Cross is also 7-1 in doubles, alongside teammate Zach Teffner (Cortland/Lakeview), as he secured wins against Ted Tiu/Matt Holtschneider (Catholic) 8-2, Jarrett Pelton/John Miller (St. John Fisher) 8-6, Santiago Camero/Laurent Ruttkowski (Eastern Nazarene) 8-5, Blake Martin/Elliott Kleckner (Lebanon Valley) 8-1 and Jordan Pieper/Nathan Seaton (Nebraska Wesleyan) 8-1.
Groves brings her singles and doubles records to 7-1 as well as she receives her first player of the week honors.
In singles, Groves had victories against Kelly Nguyen (DeSales) 6-0, 6-0, Jenna Gietl (Catholic) 6-0, 6-1, Kaili Saffran (St. John Fisher) 6-2, 6-2, Jessica Kennedy (Roanoke) 6-4, 6-3, and Torey Kogel (Nebraska Wesleyan) 6-0, 6-2.
With partner Kayla Johnston (Ashtabula/Lakeside), Groves defeated Kelly Nguyen/Amber Achenbach (DeSales) 8-4, Jenna Gietl/Erin Cole (Catholic) 8-0, Kaili Saffran/Cassidy Bell (St. John Fisher) 8-1, Jessica Kennedy/Avery Smith (Roanoke) 9-8 and Torey Kogel/Maddi Hinshaw (Nebraska Wesleyan) 8-1.
The Purple Raider tennis teams both went 4-1 overall in Hilton Head, taking their records to 6-2.
Next up for the women's tennis team is a home match against Grove City (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m.
The men's team will travel to Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) on Thursday, March 15 at 4:30 p.m.
