Mount Union's Judd Lutz and Sean Denard Earn All-American Honors at NCAA Track and Field Championships

BEREA, Ohio--Mount Union senior Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) and sophomore Sean Denard (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) finished second and seventh respectively to each earn All-American honors in the discus at the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Lutz, in his fourth straight national meet, posted a mark of 172-7 which earned him All-American honors for a third time in the discus in his career and left him two feet three inches behind champion Sean Larson of Wisconsin-Stout (174-10).  He also placed 10th in the shot put earlier in the week.

Denard earned All-American honors in his first appearance in the national meet with a throw of 166-10.

The duo were two of four Purple Raiders as sophomore Aubree Jones (Falconer, NY/Falconer) placed 13th in the women's discus (135-10) and freshman Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) was 14th in the 400 meters and 16th in the 200 meters.

DAY 2 RECAP
(BEREA, OH)--Mount Union senior Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) finished 10th in the shot put and freshman Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) placed 14th in the 400 meters Friday at the 2010 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Lutz, a two-time All-American in the event, posted a mark of 52-4 which left him just 2.75 inches from making the finals.  Brandon Fuggett of Salisbury (MD) won the event with a mark of 58-9.75.  Lutz also will compete in the discus, where he is seeded second in the nation, Saturday at 2:30 pm.

Mahoney was the only freshman that qualified to race in the 400 meters and posted a time of 57.21 and missed the finals by just over a second.  She placed 16th in the 200 meters on Thursday.

Lutz and Mahoney are two of four Purple Raiders at the national meet of 688 participants. 

Sophomore Sean Denard (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) competes with Lutz in the men's discus, while sophomore Aubree Jones (Falconer, NY/Falconer) competes in the women's discus on Saturday at noon.

(BEREA, OH)--Mount Union freshman Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) placed 16th in the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash Thursday at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Mahoney was one of only two freshman in a loaded 200 field that featured all five All-Americans including two of the top three finishers from a year ago.  Mahoney gets another shot running in the preliminaries of the 400 meter dash Friday at 4 pm.

Mahoney is one of four Mount Union student-athletes competing at the meet.

Senior Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) competes in the shot put Friday at 1:30 pm while he and teammate sophomore Sean Denard (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) throw the discus Saturday at 2:30 pm, while sophomore Aubree Jones (Falconer, NY/Falconer) throws the discus at Saturday 12 pm.

The top eight finishers in each event will claim All-America honors.

(ALLIANCE, OH)--Four Mount Union student-athletes, Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian), Sean Denard (Naperville, IL/Naperville North), Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) and Aubree Jones (Falconer, NY/Falconer) will compete at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships this Thursday through Saturday (May 27-29) at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Senior Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) will compete in the shot put (Friday 1:30 pm) and he and teammate sophomore Sean Denard (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) the in the discus (Saturday 2:30 pm), while on the women's side freshman Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) will run in the both the 200 meters (Thursday 6 pm) and 400 meters (Friday 4:10 pm) and sophomore Aubree Jones (Falconer, NY/Falconer) throws the discus (Saturday 12 pm).

Lutz will be making his fourth straight national meet appearance and he is a two-time All-American in both events (shot - 2008, 2009; discus - 2007, 2008).  Part of two National Championship teams as a member of the Mount Union football team, Lutz enters the meet ranked second in the nation in the discus (174-6) and 14th in the shot put (54-6.5).

Denard is making his first appearance in the meet and he is ranked third in the nation in the discus with a mark of 173-10.  He posted that mark winning the Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the discus while earning field athlete of the meet honors.

In her first college season, Mahoney set the school-record in the 200 meters (25.02) and is ranked 18th in the nation in that event and the 400 meters (56.68).

Jones was the OAC's women's field athlete of the meet after winning both the javelin and discus at the OAC Championships.  She is ranked 14th in the nation in the discus with a mark of 144-6.

The top eight finishers in each event will claim All-America honors.
