ADA, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's track and field team, ranked No. 6 in the nation, won two events, set two records and are in second place after day one of the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at Ohio Northern University.
The Purple Raiders are just one point behind first place John Carroll and nine points ahead of a third place tie between Otterbein and Marietta (27) while Ohio Northern has 26 points in fifth place.
The two event wins came from junior Sam Ludgood (Webster/Webster Schroeder) in the long jump title with a mark of 23-10.75 and sophomore Sean Donnelly (Willoughby/Willoughby South) in the weight throw with a mark of 56-8.75.
Two confernece championship meet records came in the preliminaries as junior Dustin Matak (Salem/Salem) had a time of 6.99 to claim the top spot in the 60 meters while sophomore Tyler Mettille (Canfield/Canfield) in the 200 meters was first with a time of 22.50.
Mettille also was tops in qualifiying in the 400 meters and freshman Tyler Sparks (Norwalk/Norwalk) is the top qualifier in the 500 meters.
The top three performances every event claim all-confernece honors and the distance medley relay team of sophomores Bryan Derr (Lakeville/Loudonville), Wade Clark (Fairview Park/Fairview) and Dan McGeary (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) along with Sparks won placed second with a time of 10:22.62.
The meet continues tomorrow at 10 am.
