Mount Union sophomore Tyler Mettille (Canfield/Canfield) was named Great Lakes Region Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year while head coach Kevin Lucas was named Great Lakes Region Men's Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Mettille is currently ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.48 -- which broke a 41-year old school record. He is also nationally ranked 23rd 400 meters (48.20) and part of the a 4×100 meter relay team that is currently ranked 15th (41.74).
He was the Ohio Athletic Conference Sprint Athlete of the Meet at the conference championships three weeks ago as he won conference titles in the 400 meters, 400 meter hurdles and the 4×100 meter relay.
In his third year coaching the men's team, Lucas has led the Purple Raiders to three-straight OAC Outdoor Track & Field titles and two straight All-Ohio championships.
Aside from Mettille, his team currently ranked No. 1 in the region, has two nationally ranked triple jumpers, a nationally ranked shot putter and hammer thrower, a 4×100 relay team currently ranked 15th, a long jumper that is currently ranked 17th.
Both will be recognized next week at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
