NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Mount Union head men's track & field coach Kevin Lucas and assistant track & field coach Tyler Mettille have won Great Lakes Indoor Track & Field head coach and assistant coach of the year honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Lucas is in his sixth year as head coach of the men's team and has led the Purple Raiders to their fifth straight All-Ohio Championships team title and fourth straight Ohio Athletic Conference Championship. The team has been nationally ranked all season -- currently No. 14 -- and a year ago placed third at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. This year four Purple Raiders are in this weekend's national meet.
The Russellville, Ohio, native has been at Mount Union for seven years as he began as the women's track and field and cross country coach in 2009 then took over the men's programs in 2010. He has led Mount Union to a combined four OAC cross country titles, nine indoor track and field titles and 11 outdoor track and field titles.
Mettille is in his first year as an assistant coach and is in charge of the jumpers. One of his athletes -- junior Zack Wukotich (Salem/Salem) is ranked No. 1 in the nation in high jump and will compete this weekend at the NCAA Championships. A native of Canfield, Ohio, Mettille competed for four years for the Purple Raider track and field teams was an 11-time All-American and part of the 2014 Outdoor Track & Field National Championship team.
