BEREA, Ohio -- Mount Union men's track and field team, ranked No. 16 in the nation, won the Sparky Adams Invitational at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders tallied 221 team points which more than doubled second place Baldwin Wallace at 107 points while NCAA Division II Ashland was third at 105 points. The meet is the final tune-up before next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at Wilmington College.
Orewiler won the pole vault with a Mount Union school record mark of 16-feet, 8.25-inches which currently stands fourth in NCAA Division III this season. He bested an 11-year old school record of 16-7.5 set by Shannon Bennington in 2005.
Berry won the 100 meters with a time of 10.74 that is 10th best in the nation this season.
The pair also combined with senior Tyler Gentry (Louisville/Louisville) and junior Andrew Shrewsbury (Woodville/Woodmore) to win the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 41.88.
In the high jump, the Raiders swept the top three and five of the top six spots led by junior Zack Wukotich (Salem/Salem) and senior Rory Juhn (Fairview Park/Fairview) both at 6-4 followed by junior Tom Hollis (Gates Mills/Gilmour Academy) at 6-2 in top three places.
The other event winners included junior Jaquill Scott (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) in the javelin (166-6), freshman Connor Troyer (Sugarcreek/Garaway) in the 110 meter hurdles (14.79), sophomore Tyler Neff (Navarre/Fairless) in the 400 meters (48.94) and freshman Colten Trimble (Hookstown, Pa./South Side Beaver) in the 800 meters (1:57.60).
There were four second place finishes from senior Tyler Shumate (Wapakoneta/Spencerville) in the hammer throw (179-3), sophomore Joe Colon (Amherst/Steele) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:16.98), junior Ty Menear (Brunswick/Brunswick) in the 1500 meters (3:59.09) and senior Tyler Sparks (Norwalk/Norwalk) in the 400 (22.29).
The rest of the top performances came in third place finishes from junior Adam Gundlah (Strongsville/Strongsville) in the javelin (156-8), sophomore Zack Metz (Wadsworth/Wadsworth) in the pole vault (14-1.25), junior Grant Slack (New Concord/John Glenn) in the triple jump (42-6.75), freshman Josiah Ross (Beloit/West Branch) in the 400 meter hurdles (58.16) and Gentry in the 200 meters (22.29).
