Track & Field: Raiders Sweep OAC Split Meet at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's and women's indoor track and field teams swept the team titles at the Ohio Athletic Conference Split Meet Friday at Baldwin Wallace.

The Purple Raider men's team, ranked No. 7 in the nation, won 11 events and scored 219 points which was 126 points ahead of second place John Carroll.

Headlining the winners was sophomore hurdler Mason Plant (Shreve/Triway) who set a school record in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.50 and sophomore James Roth (Massillon/Perry), who placed first in the 400 meters (50.08) and was second in the 200 meters (22.97).

Other winners were seniors Adam Sopchack (Chardon) in the 1 mile run (4:26.29) and Raphael Tshikala (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) in the triple jump (42-9.75), junior Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) in the 55 meter dash (6.41), sophmomores AJ Digby (Tontogany/Otsego) in the 500 meters (1:07.90) and Sean Sherman (Franklin/Bishop Fenwick) along with freshmen Mark Worley (North Canton/Hoover) in the 800 meters (1:59.68), Evan Hershberger (Dalton) in the high jump (6-5).

On the women's side, Mount Union scored 202.5 points which was 69 in front of Ohio Northern while the Raiders got wins in eight events.

Sophomore Daijana Johnson (Alliance) picked up two of those wins in the 55 meter dash (7.33) and the long jump (17-10.75).

More wins came from sophomores Rachael Adams (Louisville/St. Thomas Aquinas) in the 200 meters (26.47), Sarah Mason (Alliance/Marlington) in the 800 meters (2:23.78), Aamirah Howard (Akron/Woodridge) in the 55 meter hurdles (8.73) and Lindsay Thut (Aurora/Crestwood) in the 400 meters (1:02.09) with freshman Alex Johnson (Dover) winning the triple jump (34-7.75).

The 4x200 meter relay team of sophomores Caitlynn Connor (Boardman) and Hannah Kahn (Beachwood) with freshmen Cortni Arp (Copley) and Megan Bailey (Alliance) rounded out the winners with a time of 1:50.81.

Both teams are in action next Saturday, Jan. 27 at the SPIRE Invitational at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
