The Mount Union 4x400 meter relay team ran the second-best time this season in NCAA Division III by placing second at the Jesse Owens Classic at The Ohio State University Saturday in Columbus.
The four Purple Raiders -- Sam Printy (Sandusky / Perkins), Clark Etzler (Elida), James Roth (Massillion / Perry) and AJ Digby (Tontogany / Otsego) finished with a time of 3:13.99 which was 0.07 behind the host Buckeyes who won the event and just 0.24 seconds behind a time ran from the team at Bethel (Minn.) later in the day. Mount Union won the national in the event at both last year's outdoor and this indoor NCAA Championships.
Mason Plant (Shreve / Triway) matched his season-best time of 14.33 and placed third in the 100 meter hurdles at Ohio State.
The rest of the Mount Union team, which is ranked No. 7 in nation, won the Don Frail Invitational Saturday at Marietta College in the final tune-up before next weekend's Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.
The Raiders scored 163.5 points and won five events.
Josh Perry (Cuyahoga Falls) was part of two of those wins as he took the title in the 200 meters then combined with Josh Weber (Wadsworth), Kendall Shadie (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Malik Britt (Bossier City, La. / Airplane) won the 4x100 meter relay.
The other wins came in field events as Evan Hershberger (Dalton) won the high jump, Matt Keim (Bolivar / Tusky Valley) won the pole vault and Jaquill Scott (East Hanover, N.J. / Hanover Park) won the javelin.
