ADA, Ohio – The No. 8 ranked Mount Union men's track and field team won two events and sits second in the team standings after day one of the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships Friday at Ohio Northern University in Ada.
The Purple Raiders have 68 points which leave them four behind John Carroll (72 points) while Otterbein is in third place with 25 points.
Senior Jaquill Scott (East Hanover, N.J. / Hanover Park) defended his title in the javelin throw with a career-best and school-record mark of 220-feet, 8-inches. The mark broke a 30-year conference record in the event held by Tom Scholato of Baldwin Wallace and is currently third-best in NCAA Division III this season.
Sophomore Matt Keim (Bolivar / Tusky Valley) also defended his conference crown in the pole vault with a career-best mark of 17-feet, 0.25-inches and moved up to third in the nation in the event.
The Purple Raiders had six other all-conference performances on the day as sophomore Bryce Biskup (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) placed second in the javelin, senior Adam Sopchak (Chardon) was second in the 10,000 meters, senior Jalen McGill (Laurel, Md. / High Point) was third in the long jump, senior Zack Metz (Wadsworth) was third in the pole vault, junior Lucas Cooper (Hanoverton / United Local) was third in the discus and the 4x800 meter relay team of sophomore Jake Meeks (Massillon / Perry) and freshmen Michael Chavarria (Canton / GlenOak), Jonathon Wahlie (Lima / Shawnee) and Mark Worley (North Canton / Hoover) placed third.
Sophomore Mason Plant (Shreve / Triway) headlined the Raiders running event qualifiers as he grabbed the top spot in the 110 meter hurdles while also taking three of the top five spots in the 400 meter finals as sophomore James Roth (Massillon / Perry) in first, sophomore AJ Digby (Tontogany / Otsego) in second and junior Sam Printy (Sandusky / Perkins) in fifth.
Mount Union also grabbed three spots in the 200 meter finals as Digby is third, junior Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) is fifth and Roth is sixth.
The meet concludes on Saturday.
