ADA, Ohio – The No. 8 ranked Mount Union men's track and field team won its eighth straight team title at the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships at Ohio Northern University in Ada.
It is the conference record 36th team title for the Purple Raiders who scored 212 points which was 50 points ahead of second place John Carroll.
Head coach Kevin Lucas and his staff won OAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the fifth time over his eight seasons as men's coach.
Mount Union won five events and had 15 second and third place finishes. Each top three finish earned all-conference honors.
Senior Jaquill Scott (East Hanover, N.J. / Hanover Park) defended his title in the javelin throw with a conference and school-record mark of 220-feet, 8-inches that bested a conference mark that stood for 30 years.
Three other Raiders defended their conference titles as sophomore Matt Keim (Bolivar / Tusky Valley) won the pole vault (17-0.25), sophomore AJ Digby (Tontogany / Otsego) won the 400 meters (48.46) and junior Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) won the 100 meter dash (10.71).
Mount Union's other event win came from sophomore Mason Plant (Shreve / Triway) in the 110 meter hurdles (14.47).
Digby and Berry also went 2-3 in the 200 meters and Berry also combined with freshmen Darian Littlejohn (Fulton, Md. / Reservoir), Kendall Shadie (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Malik Britt (Bossier City, La. / Airplane) to get second in the 4x100 meter relay.
Other second place finishes came from sophomore Bryce Biskup (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) in the javelin, senior Adam Sopchak (Chardon) in the 10,000 meters, freshman Mark Worley (North Canton / Hoover) in the 800 meters, sophomore James Roth (Massillon / Perry) in the 400 meters, senior Raphael Tshikala (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) in the triple jump.
Third place finishes were had by sophomore Connor Brogan (Dover) in the hammer throw, sophomore Tanner Slack (New Concord / John Glenn) in the high jump, senior Jalen McGill (Laurel, Md. / High Point) in the long jump, senior Zack Metz (Wadsworth) in the pole vault, junior Lucas Cooper (Hanoverton / United Local) in the discus.
Two relay teams also posted third place finishes -- the 4x800 meter relay team of sophomore Jake Meeks (Massillon / Perry) and freshmen Michael Chavarria (Canton / GlenOak), Jonathon Wahlie (Lima / Shawnee) and Mark Worley (North Canton / Hoover) and the 4x400 meter relay team that included Chavarria, Worley with freshman Issac Phillips (Milford, Mich.) and sophomore Mitchell Milem (Columbus / St. Charles).
