Track & Field: Mount Union Men's 4x400 Relay Runs Nation's Best Time at SPIRE Midwest Open

GENEVA, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's 4x400 meter relay team posted the best time in NCAA Divsion III this season Saturday at SPIRE Midwest Open.

The team of seniors Sam Printy (Sandusky / Perkins), Clark Etzler (Elida) and juniors James Roth (Massillon / Perry) and AJ Digby (Tontogany / Otsego) posted a time of 3:15.72 which won the event and put them on top of the NCAA Division III performance list for this season. The Purple Raiders swept both indoor and outdoor national titles in the event last year.

A pair of throwers also tossed themselves to the NCAA Championships as senior Lucas Cooper (Hanoverton / United Local) and junior Sean Sherman (Franklin / Bishop Fenwick) placed second and third in the shot put respectively. Cooper posted a mark of 54-feet, 1-inch which is third best in the nation this season while Sherman went 53-feet, 9.25-inches and stands fifth overall in NCAA Division III.

Digby posted another NCAA provisional mark in the 400 meters who posted a time of 49.01 to finish fourth in the event and sit in seventh on the NCAA Division III list.

Also at the event were a pair of second place finishes from junior Mason Plant (Shreve / Triway) in the 60 meter hurdles (8.07) and sophomore Evan Hershberger (Dalton) in the high jump (6-7) along with a third from Roth in the 400 meters (48.99).

On the women's side, freshman Bri Aveni (Geneva) had a season-best and an NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault with a mark of 11-feet, 6.5-inches.

Also getting an NCAA provisional time was the 4x400 meter relay team of freshmen Maryonna Cathey (New London) and Olivia Powers (Norwalk / St. Paul), sophomore Cortni Arp (Copley) and junior Sarah Mason (Alliance / Marlington) in third place at the meet and eighth nationally with a time of 3:59.54.

Senior Hilary Reigle (Madison) set a second school record in as many weeks this time in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:09.42

Sophomore Alexianna Johnson (Dover) also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 16-feet, 8.5-inches. 

Mount Union hosts the Jim Wuske Invitational next Saturday at Peterson Fieldhouse on campus in Alliance.
