BOSTON, Mass. – Mount Union's men's track and field team finished in a tie for second place at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The Purple Raiders won two events and tallied points in one other event but came up just of defending its national title. North Central (Ill.), who Mount Union edged out by a single point a year ago, won the team title with 55 points while Mount Union and Wisconsin-LaCrosse each had 39 points.
There was another tie as senior Connor Troyer (Garaway / Sugarcreek) and junior Mason Plant (Shreve / Triway) tied for the individual title in the 60 meter hurdles as both ran times of 8.04 seconds. It makes Plant a back-to-back national champ in the event and Troyer is All-American for a second time and first time since 2017.
Troyer, James Roth (Massillon / Perry) and AJ Digby (Tontogany / Otsego) ran in the 4x400 meter relay along with senior Clark Etzler (Elida) and to run a time of 3:14.79 to give Mount Union its second straight and third title in six years indoors in the event.
Roth and Digby also ran in the finals of the 400 meters and placed fourth and seventh with times of 48.25 and 48.63 respectively to both earn All-American honors.
The Raiders other points came from junior Sean Sherman (Franklin / Bishop Fenwick), who was an All-American for the second straight year in the shot put as he placed fifth with a mark of 56-feet, 3.25-inches.
Junior Lucas Cooper (Hanoverton / United Local) also placed 18th in the shot put, while on Friday, sophomore Evan Hershberger (Dalton), placed 13th in the high jump and senior Hiliary Reigle (Madison), the lone member of the women's team competing, placed 12th in the 5000 meters.
