WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- A couple record setting performances in the hurdles along with two other wins led the way as the Mount Union men's track and field team claimed its ninth straight team title at the 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at Otterbein University.
The Purple Raiders tallied 197 points to win their conference record 37th outdoor team title and hold off second place John Carroll by 14 points. Otterbein was in third place with 178 points.
Connor Troyer (Sugarcreek / Garaway) won the 400 meter hurdles with a conference record time of 51.87 and his time of 14.42 in the 110 meter hurdles would have beat the conference record heading into the meet but was second to his teammate Mason Plant (Shreve / Triway), who ran an OAC record time of 14.25 to defend his title.
Troyer also finished sixth in the long jump to score a team-high 21 points for Mount Union and was named OAC Sprinter of the Meet.
Head coach Kevin Lucas and his staff won OAC Men's Coaching Staff of the Year honors for a sixth time.
James Roth (Massillon / Perry) got the win in the 400 meters (47.76) as four different Raiders scored points in the event as AJ Digby (Tontogany / Otsego) was all-conference in second, Dylon Campbell (Cuyahoga Falls) was fourth and Clark Etzler (Elida) was seventh.
Roth also was all-conference with a third place finish in the 200 meters (22.21) followed by Digby and Campbell in seventh and eighth.
Mount Union also swept the top three spots in the high jump as Evan Hershberger (Dalton) won the conference title with a mark of 6-feet, 8-inches, while teammates Jordan Hiatt and Tanner Slack both finished tied for second to get all-conference honors.
Lucas Cooper (Hanoverton / United Local), Jeremiah Gyulai (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls), Sean Sherman (Franklin / Bishop Fenwick) and Alex Bryan (Geneva) each took second in the discus (155-10), javelin (160-10), shot put (51-7.25) and 800 meters (1:56.38) respectively and were all-conference.
