ANGOLA, Ind. – The Mount Union's men's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at Trine University against Thomas More (Ky.) and Trine (Ind.).
The Purple Raiders (1-5) claimed their first victory in program history against Thomas More (0-7), winning in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 28-26.
Sophomore outside hitter Justin Sibbel (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) led the offense against the Saints with 10 kills while hitting .333. Sibbel also landed three services aces alongside freshman opposite hitter Mark Bruns (Columbus/Upper Arlington) who also had three.
Freshman setter Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls/Archbishop Hoban) tallied 31 assists against the Saints to help fuel the win.
Defensively, sophomore libero Andrew Chen (Brooklyn City, Minn./Park Center Senior) dug up 10 balls to lead the team while Bruns and freshman middle hitter Sam Matonis (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) provided three blocks each.
Mount Union saw multiple comebacks in its second match of the day but fell short against Trine (2-2) by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 25-21.
Bruns was atop of the group versus the Thunder with 11 kills. Setting up the offense was Leyden, who recorded 21 assists. Bruns and Sibbel supplied three service aces for Mount Union in the match; Sibbel with two and Bruns with one.
Six players collected digs for the Mount Union defense as Chen was once again the frontrunner with 10. At the net, the Raiders tallied seven blocks as Bruns, Matonis and freshman middle hitter Kaleb Krebs (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) each had two.
Mount Union returns home to host Hiram on Tuesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.
