BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Mount Union's men's volleyball team rallied to win a five-set thriller 3-2 at Geneva Thursday night in Beaver Falls, Pa.
After falling 25-22 in the first set, the Purple Raiders won the second and third sets, 25-16 and 25-11 but suffered a 29-27 loss in the fourth set before a 15-9 victory in the fifth and deciding set.
Sophomore outside hitter Justin Sibbel (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and freshman opposite hitter Mark Bruns (Columbus/Upper Arlington) led the Mount Union attack with 24 and 20 kills respectively and freshman setter Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron Hoban) dished out a season-high 61 assists to help lead the offense.
Senior outside hitter Jordan Spurling (Columbus/Groveport Madison) and freshman middle hitter Sam Matonis (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) each registered 3.0 blocks, while freshman libero Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) recorded a season-high 29 digs.
Geneva (Pa.) (15-6) was led by Quinn McCracken's 14 kills.
Mount Union (6-15) next travels to a tri-match against Wilson and Elizabethtown Saturday, March 9 beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Elizabethtown, Pa.
