READING, Pa. -- The Mount Union men's volleyball team was shutout by Baruch (N.Y.) and Alvernia (Pa.), 3-0, Saturday afternoon during a tri-match hosted by Alvernia.
The Purple Raiders (8-17) were just edged out in their match against Baruch (12-9), falling by scores of 22-25, 23-25 and 28-30. Against Alvernia (7-14), Mount Union lost 18-25, 13-25 and 18-25.
Opposite hitter Mark Bruns (Columbus/Upper Arlington) led the offense in both matches, recording 19 kills against Baruch and 11 against Alvernia.
In match one against Baruch, outside hitter Justin Sibbel (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) also had double digit kills with 15. Majority of Bruns' and Sibbel's kills came off of Jermey Leyden's (Cuyahoga Falls/Archbishop Hoban) 44 assists.
Defensively, three Raiders collected digs with libero Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) ahead of the group with 18, followed by Sibbel with 11 and Jordan Spurling (Columbus/Groveport Madison) with 10. At the net, Bruns and middle hitter Sam Matonis (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) both registered three blocks.
Against Alvernia, Matonis joined Bruns in the kills category with 11. Continuning to set up the offense, Leyden dished out 31 assists in the match.
Grenier and Bruns remained strong in the back court and at the net to lead the team; Grenier with 11 digs and Bruns with three blocks.
Mount Union makes its return to Ohio and will next play at Hiram Tuesday, March 19 in a 7 p.m. start.
