CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Mount Union has accepted an invitation to join the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League effective for the 2019-20 academic year.
Formed in 2014, the MCVL membership roster in 2019-20 along with Mount Union includes Adrian College (Adrian, Mich.), Fontbonne University (St. Louis, Mo.), Mt. St. Joseph University (Cincinnati, Ohio), Olivet College (Olivet, Mich.) and Trine University (Angola, Ind.).
The league also announced that Wabash College (Crawfordsville, Ind.) will join the MCVL in the 2020-21 academic year.
"The MCVL offers us great competition with teams from around our region and the opportunity to compete for a championship," commented second year Mount Union head coach Matt Mihelic.
The Purple Raiders played their inaugural season a year ago and posted an 8-20 record.
"We are proud to announce the granting of MCVL membership to the University of Mount Union," MCVL Commissioner Chuck Yrigoyen said. "I know how excited Matt Mihelic and Mount Union are about their program. The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League has gone through several membership changes the last few years, but the league's strength has remained constant. Men's Volleyball continues to have a consistent growth pattern in NCAA Division III, which is a great thing for our league and for the sport."
In 2020, the MCVL schedule will include each team playing a match against each of the other teams both home and away for 10 matches. The top four teams in the MCVL standings will qualify for the MCVL Tournament on April 10-11, 2020 at the site of the highest seed, with the MCVL Tournament champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship.
Mount Union's first MCVL match will be Friday, Jan. 20, 2020 at 7 p.m. against Olivet at Timken Gymnasium in Alliance.
