CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mount Union's men's volleyball team was picked to finish third in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League preseason coaches poll.
It is the Purple Raiders first season in the conference as they start their second year as a varsity sport. Mount Union won eight matches in its inaugural season a year ago inlcuding a win against fellow MCVL member Trine. Second year head coach Matt Mihelic returns nine letterwinners from that 2019 squad led by sophomore outside hitter Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington).
The Raiders tallied 15 points in the poll which is five points behind second place Mt. St. Joseph. Defending MCVL champion Fontbonne (Mo.) tops the preseason poll with five of the six first place votes.
Fontbonne had 26 wins and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation. The Griffins, who played in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the national quarterfinals, will be led by All-MCVL first team setter Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell.
Mount Union begins its season January 24 with a match against Concordia-Wisconsin at Trine University in Angola, Ind. The Raiders home opener is February 6 at 7 p.m. against Wittenberg and its first MCVL match is February 21 at 7 p.m. against Olivet (Mich.) in Alliance.
