Men's Volleyball: Raiders Win Five Set Match Over Penn-State Behrend

ERIE, Pa. - The Mount Union men's volleyball team defeated Penn-State Behrend 3-1, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23, 15-10, Thursday evening. 

The Purple Raiders (3-0) were led by junior Justin Sibbel (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) with 10 kills and sophomore Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron Hoban) with a game-high 54 assists. 

The Lions (2-2) were led by JP Godsel with nine kills. 

Defensively, sophomore Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) added 16 digs, while freshman Andrew Cross (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis University High) contributed four blocks. 

Penn State Behrend opened the match with 6-2 lead. Mount Union fought back and tied the set at 14-14 with multiple kills from Sibbel. The Lions went on an 8-3 run grabbing the 22-17 advantage. Freshman Chris Wikar (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence Senior) recorded a kill to bring the Raiders back within 3, 23-20. Penn State-Behrend went on to win the set 25-21. 

Mount Union started the second set with a 2-0 advantage. The Lion bounced back tying the set up at 4-4. The Raiders regained the lead, 13-7,  with kills from Cross, Sibbel, and sophomore Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington). Penn State-Behred responded with a 14-8 surge, cutting Mount Union's lead to one point 20-19. The Raiders finally took control and didn't look back winning the set 25-23.

The Raiders and Penn-State kept the third set close tying at 6-6. With four lead changes and two ties, the Lions finally claimed the third set 25-23.

Mount Union only trailed once in the fourth set, winning 25-23.

The Raiders once again never trailed in the fifth set, winning the game and the set 15-10. 

Mount Union continues play Sunday, Feb. 2 with a tri-match against Elmira (N.Y.) and Hiram at 2 and 4 p.m.
