ALLAINCE, Ohio - The Mount Union men's volleyball team swept Olivet, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23, to earn their first Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League win.
The Purple Raiders (9-1, 1-0 MCVL) were led by junior Justin Sibbel (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) with 12 kills and sophomore Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron Hoban) with 24 assists. Defensively, sophomore Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) and junior Andrew Chen (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Park Center Senior) recorded six digs each.
Dan Hayes paced the Comets (1-9, 0-1 MCVL) with eight kills.
Mount Union jumped out to a 10-3 lead to start the first set. The Comets rallied going on an 8-4 run to bring the score back within three points. With kills from sophomore Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington), freshman Andrew Cross (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis University High) and Sibbe, the Raiders bounced back winning the set 25-18.
Both teams went back and forth with 12 ties and 13 lead changes, until the Raiders started to pull away, 22-19, with kills from sophomore Sam Matonis (Macedonia / Walsh Jesuit), Bruns, and Sibbel. Mount Union scored three out of the last four points to win the set 25-20.
The Raiders opened the final set with 6-1 lead. Olivet retaliated with a 5-1 surge to cut the Mount Union lead to one point. Matonis, freshman Chris Wikar (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence Senior) and Sibbel all recorded kills to put the Raiders back on top 8-13. The Comets fought back to bring the score back within one point, 21-20, but Mount Union never trailed winning the set and the match 25-23.
The Raiders continue play hosting a tri-match against Alderson Broaddus and Geneva (Pa.) Tuesday, March 3 at 4 and 8 p.m.
