ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Mount Union men's volleyball team fell to Fontbonne (Mo.) in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match-up Friday evening in MABEE Gymnasium.
The Purple Raiders were led by junior Justin Sibbel (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) with 16 kills and sophomore Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron Hoban) with 29 assists. Leading the Mount Union defense was sophomore Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) recording 15 digs and freshman Andrew Cross (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis University High) with three blocks.
Both teams went back forth with 13 ties and 12 lead changes. Mount Union took control 19-17 with a kill from Leyden and never looked back winning the set 27-25.
Fontbonne quickly won the second set, despite five kills from Sibbel, 25-17. The Griffins jumped out to a 10-4 led and never trailed in set three, winning 25-16.
After a tie at 10-10, Fontbonne went on a 6-0 run to take the lead 16-10. The Griffins never faltered, winning the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
The Raiders continue play tomorrow March 7 at Mount St. Joseph's in a MCVL match-up at 4 p.m.
