INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Mount Union is one of 32 teams to qualify for the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday, November 19 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
It is the first appearance in the national meet for the Purple Raiders as a team since 2014 and the 21st appearance overall for the program that won the 1974 national championship.
Mount Union placed second at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships and fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional this past weekend in Holland, Mich.
Sixteen teams earned automatic spots into the national tournament by placing first or second at their respective regional meets while Mount Union was one of 16 at-large teams chosen to compete in the event.
Three of the Raiders competing earned all-region honors in freshman Preston Myers (Alliance/Marlington), senior Matt O'Neil (Woodbridge, Va./Pope John Paul) and junior Adam Sopchak (Chardon / Chardon).
The rest of the team running in Kentucky are junior Nick Thomas (Louisville/Louisville), sophomores Colten Trimble (Hookstown, Pa. / South Side Area) and Josh Thorne (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) with freshman Jon Bach (Wadsworth/Wadsworth) and fellow freshman Jared Marsh (Massillon/Massillon Jackson) as the alternate.
