(TIFFIN, OH)--Mount Union College's softball team scored wins of 3-1 and 8-0 at Heidelberg University Saturday in Tiffin to clinch a spot in next week's four-team Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.
Mount Union finished the regular season at 26-14 overall and at 12-6 in the OAC the Purple Raiders will be the No. 3 seed and play No. 2 seed John Carroll University next Friday in the first round of the OAC Tournament. Regular season champion and No. 1 seed Ohio Northern University will host the tournament and play No. 4 seed Muskingum College.
Junior Meghan Simons (Minerva/Minerva) led the Purple Raiders at the plate on the day as she had four hits, a double, two home runs and drove in five runs.
Simons hit a three run home run in the opener and it would be all the runs Mount Union would need as freshman Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) pitched a complete game three hitter with six strikeouts to go to 9-7 on the season.
In game two, Simons went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, sophomore Meghan Allen (Hartville/Lake) had two hits and drove in two runs and freshman Ashley Henriques (Canton/GlenOak) drove in a run on two hits to pace the Raiders.
Allen and Henriques each had RBI singles in a four-run fifth inning that blew a 2-0 game open that the Raiders ended with two more runs in the sixth to end the game.
Sophomore pitcher Kellie Schmucker (Louisville/Marlington) allowed only five hits and struck out five to pick up the win.
