Softball Beats Methodist and #10 Gustavus Adolphus in Florida

(PANAMA CITY, FL)--Mount Union's softball team won both games of their day-night double header Friday with a 4-3 win over Methodist (NC) and a 5-1 win over No. 10 in the nation Gustavus Adolphus (MN).

In game one, the Purple Raiders scored first in the second inning with a solo home run by senior shortstop Meghan Simons (Minerva/Minerva).  Mount Union would go on to score two more runs in the inning making the score 3-0.

Mount Union posted one more run in the third inning when junior second baseman Alex Lucak (Maple Heights/Trinity) would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from junior right fielder Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland).

Methodist answered back in the fourth inning with two runs on two hits and once again in the fifth inning putting the score at 4-3 before sophomore pitcher Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) came in and slammed the door for the Raiders and preserve the win for Kellie Schmucker (Louisville/Marlington).

In game two, a night game against #10 Gustavus Adolphus (MN), the Purple Raiders scored first with three runs on three hits in the second inning off a group of singles. Mount Union added to their lead with two runs in the third inning, making the score 5-0.

Gustavus Adolphus' only run would come late in the fifth inning when Sam Breneman would come around to score on a ground out by Lisa Klass.

Rader and Anna Horning (Cuyahoga Falls/Woodridge) each drove in two runs for the Raiders, while sophomore pitcher Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) got the win as she pitched seven innings and gave up just one run on two hits with five strikeouts. 

Mount Union takes on Ithaca (NY) Saturday at 1:00 (CST) at the Frank Brown Complex in Panama City Beach, Florida.
