SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Mount Union's softball team split a doubleheader with Notre Dame (Ohio) on Monday. The Purple Raiders dropped the first game, 9-6, but then rebounded for a 12-8 decision.

In game two, the Raiders (8-6) erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning and then five in the seventh.

With Mount Union trailing 2-0, Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) and Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland) led off the fifth with singles.

Marissa Earl (Massillon/Massilon Washington) smacked an RBI single and then the Raiders scored three runs -- courtesy of two Notre Dame errors on one play -- to take a 4-2 lead.

Brenna Longo (Moon, Pa./Moon) singled and both Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) and Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) walked before the Raiders pushed across three runs on two more Falcon miscues.

In the inning, four hits, three errors and one wild pitch helped Mount Union take a 7-2 advantage.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Notre Dame's Michelle Dykes connected for a three-run home run, trimming the hosts' deficit to 7-5.

Mount Union opened its seventh inning with five consecutive base runners: Palombaro singled, Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) walked and Willis singled, setting the stage for RBI singles by Gromes and Rader.

Longo added a two-run single later in the frame, putting the Raiders up 12-5.

The Falcons came back with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Christine Camp's two-run triple.

Longo finished with a 3-for-5 game, Gromes went 2-for-4 with two runs and Rader was 2-for-3.

Willis (5-2) was the winning pitcher. She went the distance, four earned runs on 11 hits. She had five strikeouts and two walks.

Charisse Colston batted 2-for-2, including a triple, for Notre Dame. Dykes finished 2-for-4 and Mallory Harder went 2-for-5.

Colston drove in the Falcons' first run on a sac fly in the second. Steph Glueck put Notre Dame up 2-0 with an RBI double in the third.

Christina Hutchison suffered the pitching loss.

In the opener, Colston powered the Falcons, batting 3-for-3 with a double, triple and grand slam. She also scored four runs.

The contest was tied at 2-all before Colston's homer.

During the Notre Dame first, Colston doubled and scored on a triple by Harder. Her three-bagger came in the third; she scored on a sacrifice fly by Christine Kasidonis.

In between Notre Dame's two scores, the Purple Raiders plated a pair.

Longo smacked an RBI double to tie the score at 1-1 in the second. Gromes singled in the third and eventually crossed home plate on a passed ball, giving Mount Union its only lead at 2-1.

After going ahead 6-2 in the fourth, the Falcons tacked on their seventh run in the fifth.

Mount Union answered with four runs in the sixth.

Sarah Woody (Uniontown/Green) doubled, Mara Palombaro walked and Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) singled, loading the bases with no outs. Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green) knocked in Woody with a fielder's choice groundout. Longo then reached on an error and drove in Amanda Pool (Bergholz/Edison).

With two outs, Gromes smacked a two-run single, pulling the Raider deficit to 7-6, but those were the last runs which Mount Union mustered.

The Falcons expanded their lead with two insurance runs in their sixth: Christina Hutchison had a sacrifice fly and Harder knocked an RBI double.

McAninch and Earl had 2-for-4 games. Gromes went 2-for-3.

In the pitcher's circle, McAninch (2-2) worked six innings, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits. She recorded five strikeouts and one walk.

For Notre Dame, Harder finished 2-for-4, Kelli Lennox batted 2-for-3 and Nicole Spehar scored twice.

Ashley Harbarger was the winning pitcher while Kim Lennox got the save. Harbarger worked the first five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, before Kim Lennox threw the final two frames.

The Raiders will be in action again on Tuesday with an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Heidelberg. The games will begin at 3:30 p.m. at 23rd Street Field.
