Softball Takes Two at Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—After a day off on Wednesday, the Mount Union softball team claimed two victories—a 3-2 win over Beloit (Wis.) and 5-0 decision against Simpson (Iowa)—in Rebel Spring Games action at the Osceola County Complex on Thursday.

The Purple Raiders (4-4) gave senior Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) an early 3-0 lead, and that is all she would need. Willis was able to keep the Buccaneers off the base paths most of the game, allowing just four hits and one earned run.  She also recorded five strikeouts on her way to her first win on the season.

Junior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) and sophomore Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green) fueled the Raider offense. After drawing a walk in the first inning, Gromes stole second and advanced to third on a sac bunt. Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) then hit a ball to the left side of the infield and an error by the Beloit third baseman allowed her to go all the way to second base and drove Gromes home. Earl then stole third and was driven in on a groundout by Papp.

Gromes led off the third inning with another walk and stolen base. Papp would bring her around to score on a double later in the inning.

In the second game, junior Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) recorded a complete game shutout against Simpson to get the Raiders back to .500 on the season.

Freshman Heather Kopack (Westlake/Westlake) drove in a pair of runs for the Raiders. Amy Brown (Uniontown/Lake) and Papp also batted in one run apiece.

The Raiders will return to action on Friday with contests against Thomas More (Ky.) and Husson (Me.) at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
