KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The Mount Union softball team split a pair of games in each of their final two days at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. to finish their spring trip at 6-6. The Purple Raiders fell to Thomas More (Ky.) in their first game on Friday before beating Husson (Me.) later in the day. On Friday, the Raiders dropped a decision to Catholic (D.C.) and then defeated Bluffton to end the trip with a victory.

In the 2-1 loss to Thomas More, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when a single by Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) plated Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton). Aided by a Mount Union error, Thomas More was able to respond with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead for good.

Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) threw a complete game in a losing effort for the Raiders, striking out seven batters with no walks. McAninch allowed just a single earned run on four hits.

Mount Union had an offensive explosion in a 9-1 win over Husson, scoring six runs in the first inning and three more runs in the second inning. Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored and Carmichael went 2-for-3 with a double, 3 RBI, and two runs scored. Hannah Kopack (Westlake/Westlake) added a pair of RBI for the Raiders.

The 9-0 lead was more than enough for freshman Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland), who earned her second win in as many starts. Stiltner allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out one batter. The game was called after five innings because the Raiders held a lead of at least eight runs.

Friday began with another 2-1 defeat, this time to Catholic, who scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. Mount Union finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-out single by Brenna Longo (Moon, Pa./Moon) that plated Carmichael. With Longo representing the tying run on first base, the Raiders struck out to end the game.

Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) threw a complete game for the Raiders. Willis allowed two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and six walks.

Mount Union tallied just three hits but were able to capitalize on seven Beaver errors in a 7-4 win over Bluffton to wrap-up the Rebel Spring Games. Gromes, Kaylah Nieschwitz (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas), and Keilah Capriola (Akron/Coventry) each had a hit for the Raiders. Nieschwitz has a pair of RBI while Gromes had one RBI.

On the mound for Mount Union was McAninch, who improved to 3-3 on the season. McAninch allowed four earned runs on nine hits while striking out three batters.

The Raiders will return to action on Thursday when they host Walsh in their home opener at 23rd Street Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 pm.
