CANTON, Ohio.—The Mount Union softball team split a pair of games with Malone, winning the first game 2-0 before dropping the nightcap 7-2, Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Canton.

Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) led the way with a masterful pitching performance for the Purple Raiders in the 2-0 win. The junior was able to keep the Pioneer hitters off-balance in throwing her second shutout of the season. McAninch (4-5) struck out seven batters while allowing just four hits in seven innings of work.

Mount Union scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, which is all McAninch needed. With one out and runners on the corners, Amy Brown (Uniontown/Lake) and Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) executed a double-steal that plated Earl for a 1-0 lead. Following a single by Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/South) that advanced Brown to third, she was able to score on a passed ball.

Stephanie Byrne (1-3) took the loss for Malone. Byrne allowed two runs on six hits while recording six strikeouts.

A six-run third inning proved too much for the Raiders to overcome in the second game. Seven players recorded at least one hit for Malone, who totaled nine for the game. Kristen Atzenhoefer led the way with three RBI, all coming on a bases loaded triple in the third inning.

Siedlak scored both runs for the Raiders. After reaching on an error in the fourth inning, she scored on a single by Keilah Capriola (Akron/Coventry) later in the inning. Siedlak added her second home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning.

Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) started the game for the Raiders. Willis (2-5) allowed six earned runs in two-plus innings of work. Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) threw four innings in relief, finishing with two strikeouts and one earned run. Shelby Snyder (1-5) struck out eight batters in six innings of work to get the win for Malone.

The Raiders are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Marietta in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener at 23rd Street Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
