ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union softball team lost a pair of two-run games to visiting Baldwin-Wallace, 8-6 and 5-3, in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (10-16, 2-6 OAC) trailed 8-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th, and nearly rallied for the comeback victory. They scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh and had the winning run at the plate before ending the game on a groundout to the shortstop.

Freshman Amy Brown (Uniontown/Lake) started the rally with a single to lead off the sixth and advanced to second base when a fly ball off the bat of freshman Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) was dropped by a Baldwin-Wallace outfielder. Sophomore Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) knocked in both players with a double to put the Raiders on the scoreboard. Sophomore Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green) singled to move Carmichael to third. Papp was then caught stealing, which allowed Carmichael to scamper home to make it 8-3.

Freshman Hannah Kopack (Westlake/Westlake) and junior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) began the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back walks. Sophomore Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) then grounded to the third baseman, who bobbled the ball on the way to third, allowing all runners to be safe. Following a fielder's choice that erased Kopack at home plate and a popup, the Raiders were down to their final out trailing by five runs.

Carmichael delivered again, this time with a single that scored Gromes and Earl. Representing the tying run, Papp came through with an RBI single that scored Brown and brought the winning run to the plate. Sophomore Brenna Longo (Moon, Pa./Moon) was then thrown out on a groundball to shortstop to end the game.

Carmichael finished with a pair of hits, including a double, and four RBI. Papp and Earl also had multi-hit games for the Raiders. Papp went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Earl was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Junior Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) went the distance for the Raiders and is now 4-9 on the season. She had four strikeouts and just one walk while allowing six earned runs. Tabitha Murray picked up her sixth victory of the season in six-plus innings of work for the Yellow Jackets. She struck out five batters and walked four while allowing three earned runs. Sarah Baker entered the game during the seventh inning and recorded her first save of the season.

The Mount Union bats were hot to begin the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning. A single by Earl was followed by a walk by freshman Julie Olbrych (Youngstown/Boardman). Brown moved both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt, and Earl scored on a single by Siedlak. Carmicahel walked to load the bases. Papp then singled, scoring Olbrych. Carmichael was thrown out on her way to third base, which allowed Siedlak to score as well, giving the Raiders a 3-1 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Alyssa Brown and Ashley Elber tied the game at 3 in the top of the fourth inning. It remained tied until the top of the sixth when Baldwin-Wallace took a 4-3 lead on an RBI single by Katie Finley that scored Kaity Mullen. The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning for the final score.

Senior Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs. She also had five strikeouts and three walks. Baker pitched six scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win for Baldwin-Wallace. Justina Wise started the game, but lasted just one inning after allowing three earned runs on three hits and walking a pair of batters/
