ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union softball team earned a pair of wins over Case Western Reserve—7-0 and 11-5—Monday afternoon at 23rd Street Field in Alliance. The 11 runs scored and 15 base hits in the second game were season-highs as senior Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) earned a pair of victories for the Purple Raiders.

Mount Union (12-16, 2-6 OAC) never trailed in either game, taking a 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd inning of Game 1 when sophomore Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) singled to score freshman Kaylah Nieschwitz (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas).

Junior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) got a four-run 5th inning started with a leadoff home run. Freshman Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) added a two-run home run of her own later in the inning and sophomore Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green) scored on a double by Brenna Longo (Moon, Pa./Moon) to take a 5-0 lead. The Raiders scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a single by Siedlak.

Willis (6-7) scattered three hits over seven innings in recording her second shutout of the season. She also had six strikeouts while walking just two batters.

Mount Union got balanced hitting in Game 2, which was its best of the season in terms of runs (11) and hits (15). Nine Raiders had at least one hit and six Raiders had at least one RBI in the victory.

The Raiders took advantage of a Spartan error with two outs in the bottom of the 1st inning to score a pair of runs on a single by Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton). A two-run home run by freshman Amy Brown (Uniontown/Lake) capped a four-run 2nd inning to take an early 6-0 run.

Starting pitcher Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) was then replaced after throwing two scoreless innings by freshman Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland). Stiltner allowed five runs before Willis came in to record the final out of the inning and maintain a 6-5 advantage.

Freshman Hannah Kopack (Westlake/Westlake) and Siedlak each drove in a run in the bottom of the 4th and Nieschwitz, Earl, and Kopack added RBIs in the 5th inning for an 11-5 lead.

Five Raiders—Earl, Brown, Kopack, Carmichael, and Nieschwitz—had two RBI in the game. Carmichael had a team-best 3 hits. Kaeleen Boden led the way for Case with two RBI.

Willis threw the final 4 1/3 innings of the game to earn the victory. The tying run was on third base when she entered the game and managed to get out of the jam with the one-run lead intact. She added five more strikeouts for a day's total of 11 1/3 scoreless innings pitched and 11 strikeouts.

Mount Union resumes Ohio Athletic Conference play when it visits John Carroll on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
