Softball Splits First Two Games To Open Season
KISSIMMEE, Fla- Mount Union's softball team split its first two games of the season defeating Transylvania (Ky.) 9-0 (5 inn.) then fell 3-0 to No. 1 ranked Montclair State (N.J.) Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
Against Transylvania, senior Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the first inning as she singled to center field which drove in senior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless). Gromes led off the inning with a single then proceeded to steal second base.
Earl plated her second RBI of the game in the fourth inning as she tripled to right center which again drove in Gromes.
Sophomore Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) and freshman Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland) each drove in a run for the Purple Raiders.
Senior Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/Jefferson) allowed just two hits and struck out five over 4.0 innings to pick up her first win of the season.
In the second game, the Raiders had a tough time mustering up any offense against the top ranked Montclair State as Alex Hill pitched a complete game one hitter and struck out 15 in the victory.
Siedlak had the only hit for the Raiders.
Mount Union (1-1) returns to the field on Monday with two games against Geneva (Pa.) and the Coast Guard (Conn.) with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
