KISSIMMEE, Fla - - Senior Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) and sophomore Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) each threw complete game shutouts as Mount Union's softball team claimed two victories, 3-0 over Bridgewater (Va.) and 7-0 over St. Norbert (Wis.) Wednesday in Kissimmee, Florida.
McAninch tossed a complete game one-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 14 batters to fuel the Purple Raiders victory over Bridgewater.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when junior Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) singled up the middle to drive in senior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) to put the Raiders up 1-0. Two batters later, freshman Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland) doubled down the right field line to drive in freshman Tara Spencer (Loveland/Loveland). Spencer replaced Carmichael as a pinch runner.
In the second game of the day, Stiltner tossed her first career complete game shutout allowing just four hits while striking out four.
Gromes singled to drive in Jesso to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. The Raiders would add two more runs later in the inning as Carmichael doubled to drive in Gromes and sophomore Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) hit a single to drive in Senior Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington).
Jesso and Gromes would each add their second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Raiders would go on for the 7-0 victory.
Mount Union (5-2) returns to the field tomorrow when it faces Washington (Md.) at 3:00 p.m. and Defiance at 5:00 p.m.
