Softball Picks Up Pair Of Victories Wednesday

KISSIMMEE, Fla - - Mount Union's softball team defeated Washington (Md.) 8-2 and Defiance 9-1 (5 innings) Thursday afternoon in Kissimmee, Florida. 

Senior pitcher Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) picked up her fourth victory of the season as she pitched a complete game allowing 10 hits while striking out seven in an 8-2 win over Washington. 

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when senior Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) doubled to drive in senior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) which gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead. 

Washington would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning as Lauren Dockrill singled to drive in Clare Hofstedt for their first run and Kristin Cooper reached first base on a bunt to drive in Shaelan Nottingham for their second run. 

Mount Union would plate three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as sophomore Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) hit her first home run of the season to tie the game at 2. Later in the inning, senior Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) and freshman Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) hit back-to-back doubles which drove in freshman Tara Spencer (Loveland/Loveland) and Mayo respectively to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead. 

The Raiders would add four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) singled to drive in Gromes and senior Rachel Jesso (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant). One batter later, freshman Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland) doubled and advanced to third base on a throwing error which scored Siedlak and freshman Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field). 

Against Defiance, Mount Union jumped out to a 9-0 lead and scored a 9-1 win in five innings.

Jesso had three hits, including her first home run of the season and drove in four, Mayo also had three hits with two RBI while Okuda and Leighty each had two hits to lead the offense for the Raiders.

Sophomore Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) did allow her first earned run in 21 innings pitched so far this season, but earned her third victory as she went the distance striking out three. 

Mount Union is back in action tomorrow for two games when it faces Mount Saint Joseph at 1:00 p.m. and Lakeland (Wis.) at 5:00 p.m.
