ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's softball team recorded two wins; 3-2 and 8-1 as it swept Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference softball series Saturday at 23rd Street Field.
With the victories, Mount Union improves to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the OAC, while Muskingum falls to 12-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
In the first game, senior Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) recorded her eighth victory of the season as she pitched a complete game and struck out six.
The Purple Raiders would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) and freshman Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland) both had RBI singles.
The Muskies would tie the game at two in the top of the fourth inning as Courtney Moyer and Andrea Larkin both had RBI singles to left center field.
Senior Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) led off the bottom of the seventh inning as she singled through the right side. Two batters later, freshman Lindsay Gerhart (Westerville/Westerville South) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Mayo to second base then junior Krista Leighty (Wooster/Triway) singled up the middle to score Mayo and give the Raiders the 3-2 victory.
In game two, sophomore Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) picked up her fifth win of the season as she pitched a game complete game and allowed one run on eight hits.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when senior Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) singled through the left side which scored senior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless).
Jaclynn Hess tied the game at one for the Muskies in the top of the fifth inning as she hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hannah Reese.
Mount Union would take the lead for good as they would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Gromes tripled home an RBI and both Earl and Siedlak had RBI singles.
Gromes hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning and the Raiders would go on for the 8-1 victory.
Mount Union next plays Saturday, April 6, when they travel to Berea to face Baldwin Wallace in an OAC doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
