COLUMBUS, Ohio - - The Mount Union softball team was swept by Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference series Wednesday afternoon at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders won the first game 2-1 and recorded a 6-2 victory in the second game.
With the victories, Capital improves to 22-8 overall and is tied for first place in the OAC standings with a 10-2 record, while Mount Union falls to 16-11 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
In the first game of the day, Brooke Billings went the distance for the Crusaders allowing just three hits and struck out four to earn her 11th win of the season.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kelsey Swain and Lexi Majoy each scored an unearned run.
Junior Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) got the Raiders on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when she belted her first home run of the season over the center field wall.
Billings sent the Raiders down in order in the top of the seventh as the Crusaders would go on for the 2-1 victory.
In the second game of the double-header, Alyssa Patznick picked up the victory for Capital as she tossed a complete game and struck out three to earn her 11th victory of the season.
Rose gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as she smacked a home run over the right field wall.
Senior Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) scored on an RBI single by Carmichael to cut the Crusaders lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
Capital would add a run in the fourth and fifth inning and would lead 4-1 after five innings of play.
Sophomore Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) cut the Raiders deficit to two, 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning as she was able to score on a groundout to second base by Mayo.
Devan Boggs hit a two run RBI double down the left field line in the top of the sixth inning and the Crusaders would go on for the 6-2 victory.
Mount Union returns home for its next series when it hosts Heidelberg Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at 23rd Street Field.
