ALLIANCE, Ohio - - The Mount Union softball team swept Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference series Sunday afternoon at 23rd Street Field.
With the victories, Mount Union improves to 18-11 overall and 8-6 in the OAC while Heidelberg falls to 11-19 overall and 1-13 in the conference.
The Purple Raiders won the first game of the double-header 6-0 and recorded a 6-2 victory in the second game.
In the first game of the afternoon, Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) tossed a complete game shutout and allowed just four hits and struck out 10 to earn her 10th victory of the season.
The Raiders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) scored on an RBI groundout by Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) and Kaylah Nieschwitz (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas) scored on a RBI single by Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland).
Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) scored on an RBI double by Gromes to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
Siedlak cleared the base with a three run double in the top of the fourth inning as the Raiders would take game one of the series 6-0.
In the second game of the double-header, Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) tossed a complete game and struck out a career-high 12 batters to earn her seventh victory of the season.
Gromes and Nieschwitz each scored a run in the bottom of the first inning as the Raiders would take a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Gromes tripled to lead off the inning and Nieschwitz reached first base on an error. Nieschwitz stole second base and Gromes scored on the play. Nieschwitz advanced to third base on the throw home and scored on a passed ball.
The Student Princes scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning when Jami Wagner scored on an RBI single by Bri Sinden.
Gromes scored an unearned run when Siedlak reached on an error as the Raiders would lead 4-1 lead after the third inning.
Stiltner struck out the side in order in the top of the fourth inning and the Raiders would add a run in the fourth, five and sixth innings as they would go on for the 6-2 victory.
Mount Union returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Marietta for a OAC double-header with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
