MARIETTA, Ohio - - The Mount Union softball team swept Marietta in its final Ohio Athletic Conference road series of the season Tuesday afternoon at Marietta field.
With the victories, Mount Union improves to 20-11 overall and 10-6 in the OAC while Marietta falls to 20-14 overall and 10-6 in league play.
In order to clinch a berth in the next week's OAC tournament, the Purple Raiders must win one of their final two games when they host Wilmington on Saturday.
The Raiders won the first game of the double-header 9-0 (5 innings) and the second game 9-3.
Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson) improves to 12-8 on the season as she pitched up victories in both games for the Raiders.
In the first game of the afternoon, McAninch threw her third no-hitter of the season and struck out five.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) scored on an RBI double by Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Raiders lead would be extended to 3-0 as Tara Spencer (Loveland/Loveland) scored on an RBI double be Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland) and Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) scored an on RBI single by Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington).
The Raiders would add six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead. Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) hit a two run double to drive in Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) and Lindsay Gerhart (Westerville/Westerville South). Earl drove in three runs with an three run double and Gromes singled home Earl.
McAninch shut down the Pioneers in order in the fifth inning as the Raiders would take the first game of the afternoon 9-0 in five innings.
In the second game, McAninch tossed a complete game and struck out a career-high 15 batters.
The Raiders scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Gromes drove in VanSickle with an RBI double as the Raiders led 4-0 after two innings of play.
Marietta cut the Raiders lead to 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Raiders responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning as Spencer, Mayo and Carmichael all scored runs as the Raiders would lead 7-3 after five innings.
VanSickle and Earl added an RBI in the top of the seventh and the Raiders would complete the sweep of Marietta with a 9-3 victory in the second game of the afternoon.
Mount Union hosts Wilmington in its regular season finale Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
