ALLIANCE, Ohio - - The Mount Union softball team swept Wilmington in its final regular season Ohio Athletic Conference series of the season Saturday afternoon at 23rd Street Field.
Mount Union won the first game 3-0 and recorded a 5-1 victory in the second game
In the first game of the afternoon Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) tossed a complete game shutout limiting the Quakers to two hits and struck out eight to earn her 13th victory of the season.
Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) tripled to center field and scored on an RBI single by Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) to give the Purple Raiders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Raiders added another in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead as Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) singled home VanSickle.
McAninch held the Quakers scoreless for the final three innings as the Raiders would go on for the 3-0 victory.
Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) earned the victory for the Raiders in the second game as she tossed a complete game and struck out six to record her eighth win of the season.
Gromes doubled to left field to lead off the top of the first inning. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jess Moracz (Westlake/Westlake) and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green). Siedlak scored on an RBI single by VanSickle as the Raiders would take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Tara Spencer (Loveland/Loveland) stole third and scored on a throwing error by the as the Raiders led 3-0 after the third inning.
Katie McDevitt scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning as the Quakers cut the lead to 3-1.
Earl scored an on RBI groundout by Moracz in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase the Raiders lead to 4-1.
The Raiders added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead as Rachel Jesso (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) singled home VanSickle.
Stiltner limited the Quakers to just one hit over the last two innings as the Raiders would complete the sweep of Wilmington with a 5-1 victory in the second game.
Mount Union will be the third seed in next week's OAC tournament and will face the two seed John Carroll Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
