Softball Takes Six Game Win Streak Into OAC Tournament

The Mount Union softball team begins play in the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference tournament this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The Purple Raiders enter as the three seed and will face the number two seed John Carroll in their first game of the double-elimination tournament Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. 

Mount Union (22-11, 12-6 OAC) will be making its 22nd appearance in the OAC tournament, which is only second to the 26 trips made by Muskingum. The Raiders have a 29-40 record in the OAC tournament, and have a record 10 second place finishes. Mount Union won its only title in 2008.

Scouting Mount Union

The Raiders enter postseason play batting .276 as a team and feature the OAC's number one ranked pitching staff with an ERA of 2.16. 

Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) leads the Raiders with 43 hits, eight doubles, three triples, 22 RBI and is tied for the team lead in home runs (4) with Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South). 

Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) leads the Raiders pitching efforts with a record of 13-8 and ranks second in the conference with a 1.84 ERA and 151 strikeouts. 

Scouting John Carroll

John Carroll finished the regular-season with an overall record of 25-9 and earned the number two seed in the OAC tournament with a 14-4 record in league play. 

The Blue Streaks enter the OAC tournament with the conference's second best batting average (.341) and the number three ERA (2.81). 

Mackenzie Griffin leads the conference with a .586 batting average and is third with 41 RBI. 

Rachel Byrnes leads the conference with 18 wins on the season and is third with a 1.94 ERA and 135 strikeouts. 

John Carroll won last year's OAC Tournament as well as in 2010. 

Scouting Marietta

Marietta ended the regular season with an overall record of 21-15 and earned the number four seed in the OAC tournament with an 11-7 record in conference play. 

The Pioneers have conference's fifth best ERA (3.10) and the seventh best batting average (.286). 

Lauren Larrick leads the Pioneers with a 10-6 record and has an ERA of 3.02. 

Trayla Liles leads Marietta with a .418 batting average and is tied for second in the conference with 10 home runs.  

Marietta won its only OAC Tournament title in 1996.

Scouting Capital

Capital ended the regular season with an overall record of 32-8 and earned the number one seed in the OAC tournament with a 16-2 record in conference play. 

The Crusaders feature the conference's  best batting average of .355 and the number two ranked pitching staff with an ERA of 2.66. 

Devan Boggs is first in the conference with 11 home runs and 47 RBI and is second in the conference with a .482 batting average. 

Alyssa Patznick is second in the conference with 17 wins and is fifth with 111 strikeouts. Brooke Billings has 15 wins on the year and leads the Crusaders with a 2.27 ERA. 

Capital has won the OAC tournament in 1997 and 1991. 

Mount Union vs. the Field 

Mount Union is 3-3 this season against the other three teams in the conference tournament. The Raiders swept Marietta, were swept by Capital and split with John Carroll. 

OAC Tournament History vs. the Field

Mount Union is 1-3 against John Carroll in OAC Tournament games. John Carroll defeated Mount Union in 2012 and 2010 and split in 2009. 

Mount Union is 3-2 against Capital in OAC Tournament games. Mount Union defeated Capital twice in 2005 and won an opening round game against the Crusaders in 1998. Capital defeated Mount Union in 2002 and 1991. 

Mount Union is 1-2 against Marietta in OAC Tournament games. The two teams split in 2006 and Marietta defeated Mount Union in the semifinals in 1985 to advance to the tournament championship.
