Softball Pounds Out 14 Hits To Defeat Capital; Advances To OAC Tournament Championship Saturday At 1:00 p.m.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - - The number three seed Mount Union softball team tied a season-high with 14 hits as it defeated the number one seed Capital 9-5 in an Ohio Athletic Conference tournament game Friday afternoon at Clowson Field. The Purple Raiders advance to tomorrow's OAC Championship game at 1:00 p.m.
With the win, Mount Union improves to 24-11 while Capital falls to 33-9.
Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) tossed a complete game for the Raiders and struck out three to earn her 15th win of the season.
Devan Boggs and Kelsey Swain each scored a run for Capital as they took a 2-0 advantage after the top of the first inning.
The Raiders would come right back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at two. Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) hit an RBI single to drive in Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) and Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) hit an RBI triple to drive in Siedlak.
Capital added two runs in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead.
Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) singled in the bottom of the second inning. She advanced to third on a single by Gromes and scored on a throwing error by the Crusaders as the Raiders trailed 4-3 after two innings of play.
The Raiders would take the lead for good as they scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 8-4 lead. Jess Moracz (Westlake/Westlake) and Siedlak each had two RBI singles and Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) hit an RBI single to drive in Mayo.
Mayo drove in her second run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Raiders a 9-4 lead.
Lexi Majoy had an RBI single in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough as the Raiders would go on for the 9-5 victory.
