Softball: Four-Run Seventh Inning Propels Mount Union To 2013 OAC Softball Tournament Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio - - A four run seventh inning propelled the Mount Union softball team to a 5-3 victory over Capital in the championship game of the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Saturday at Clowson Field in Columbus.
The Purple Raiders won their second-ever OAC Tournament title (2008 last one) and receives the OAC's automatic bid into the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament. The Raiders will find out who their opponent is and where they will be playing Monday at 10:00 a.m on an online selection show on ncaa.com.
Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) tossed a complete game in the victory and struck out two to earn her 16th victory of the season. She pitched Mount Union to all three of its tournament wins and was named to the OAC All-Tournament team.
Down 2-1 entering the top of the seventh, the first three Raiders reached base to load the bases. Alex Mayo (Greenville/Ansonia) came up the bat with two outs and hit a three-run double to left field to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) then drove in Mayo on with a single to extend the lead to 5-2.
Lacey Romero homered for the Crusaders in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-3 and got the tying run to the plate but McAninch slammed the door for the win.
With the win, Mount Union has now won a season-high nine straight games and improves to 25-11 while regular season champion Capital falls to 33-10.
Senior Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) who scored two runs today and fellow senior Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) who threw out a runner at the plate from left field were also named to the OAC All-Tournament team.
