Softball Loses A Heartbreaker To Aurora (Ill.)
ANGOLA, Indiana - - The Mount Union softball team lost 2-1 to Aurora (Ill.) in the NCAA Division III Angola Softball Regional Thursday afternoon at Trine University.
Stephanie Lynch's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave Aurora (Ill.) the 2-1 victory.
With the win, Aurora improves to 38-6 overall, while Mount Union falls to 25-12.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) hit an incredible inside-the-park home run to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. It was VanSickle's second home run of the season.
Aurora tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jessica Spoon scored on a RBI single by Lynch.
Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) held Aurora to only one run in the inning to keep the game tied. The Spartans had runners on second and third with one out but McAninch got Aurora to line out and strikeout for the final two outs of the inning.
Mount Union now falls to the loser's bracket and will play the number one seed Trine in an elimination game Friday at 10:00 a.m. Trine lost its first game 5-1 to the number eight seed Anderson (Ind.).
