Softball: Mount Union Falls to Trine In NCAA Tournament
ANGOLA, Indiana - - The No. 5 seed Mount Union softball team (25-13) saw its season come to an end Friday afternoon as it lost 6-4 to the No. 1 seed Trine (37-4) in an elimination game of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
Trine advances to play the loser of the game between Capital and Allegheny.
The Thunder jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as they scored three runs in the top of the second inning.
Andi Gasco and Leah Hall each scored on RBI singles for the Thunder as they led 5-0 after three innings of play.
Leah Harris smacked a home run over the left field fence as the Thunder took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) doubled to lead off the fifth inning. Rachel Jesso (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) reached first base on a Thunder error and Marissa Earl (Massillon/Washington) walked as the Raiders loaded the bases with no outs.
Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to the outfield which scored Carmichael to give the Raiders their first run of the game. Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green) delievered a two-run single and Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) scored Papp on an RBI triple as the Raiders scored four runs to cut the Thunder lead to 6-4 after five innings of play.
Justine Robles came on in relief for the Thunder and was able to record the final out of the fifth inning. Robles struck out three batters over the final two innings to earn the save as Trine went on for the 6-4 victory.
