Softball: Mount Union Wins a Pair of Games Monday; Five Homeruns on the Day

CLERMONT, Fla.—Mount Union's softball scored a total of 22 runs winning a pair of games –11-7 to Alvernia (Pa.) and 11-1 to SUNY-Potsdam St. (N.Y.) Monday in Clermont, Florida.

Against Alvernia, the Raiders went three up, three down shutting down Alvernia in the first inning.

Junior Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) started the Purple Raiders with a homerun as Mount Union played homerun derby hitting five homeruns on the day.

Senior Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) hit the next homerun driving in two runs giving Mount the 3-0 advantage. On the year Siedlak has five RBI's and three homeruns.

Freshman Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) singled then reached second on an error by Alvernia allowing the Purple Raiders to earn another run.

VanSickle earned an RBI batting in a runner then scored off an Olivia Schumacher (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) single to left field.

Sophomore Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) hit a single moving the bases as Siedlak went to second then advanced to third on an error by Alvernia sending Schumacher home.

Siedlak scored the fifth run of the inning off Megan Okuda's (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) single to center field as the Raiders led 8-0 in the bottom of the second.

Alvernia got on the board in the top of the third inning after a walk, a ground-rule double and a single sent two players home. Alvernia scored one more run before the third out cutting the Raiders lead to 8-3.

Alvernia threatened the lead in the top of the fourth scoring two runs off of four hits.

Schumacher and Siedlak drove the Raiders home with back-to-back homeruns earning the final three runs of the game for the Purple Raiders.

Alvernia tried to rally in the top of the seventh as Felicia McKenna hit a homerun but got no closer falling to Mount Union 11-7.

Earning the win on the mound was junior Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field) starting the season 1-0.

In game two, the Raiders gained a 7-0 lead in the first inning.

A trio a singles by VanSickle, Lehman and Okuda sent three runners home followed by a homerun for Brooke Cox (Louisville/Louisville) that drove in three more runs.

Baitt hit a double sending in the seventh run of the evening.

Both teams went scorless until Potsdam earned their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Schumacher and Siedlak earned two more RBI's in the top of the fourth sending two runners home giving Mount Union the 9-1 lead.

The Raiders crossed home plate twice in the top of the fifth inning leading to the eventual 11-1 win over Potsdam as the game ended in the bottom of the fifth due to a run-rule.

Earning in the win on the mound was sophomore Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) striking out four batters.

As a team, the Raiders are hitting a .462 batting average and averaging 8.5 runs per game. 

Mount Union plays two more games Tuesday against Wesleyan College (Ga.)at 9 am and Susquehanna (Pa.)  at 11 am.
