Softball: Raiders Split a Pair of Games; Siedlak Breaks Homerun Record

CLERMONT, Florida—The University of Mount Union softball team split a pair of games today losing to Muhlenberg 5-0 and defeating Misericordia 6-4 Thursday in Clermont, Florida.

In game one, the Purple Raiders (4-4) struggled to generate an offense.

Muhlenberg got off to an early start scoring two runs in the first inning off a double that drove in a run and a sacrifice fly and a Mount Union error sending home another run.

Muhlenberg scored three more runs throughout the game to defeat the Raiders 5-0.

Against Misericordia, Mount Union generated more offense scoring three runs in the first two innings of the game.

Freshman Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) got on base first with a single. Sophomore Olivia Schumacher (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) followed with a single to center field. The Raiders got on the board as Baitt stole home on a wild pitch.

Freshman Shelby VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) earned an RBI in the second inning hitting a double to left field then scored off a Baitt single putting the Raiders up 3-0 over the Cougars.

Misericordia came within one of Mount Union in the third inning with Kristi Seiler hitting a double to left field driving in two runs.

Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) kept the Raider lead alive by hitting a homerun in the third inning breaking a school record with 20 homeruns in her career.

Freshman Jessica Kennedy (Beach City/Fairless) and sophomore Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) both got on base with singles to shortstop as Lehman reached home off a single from junior Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richards) earning Mount Union a 5-2 lead.

Misericordia closed the lead to one – 5-4—with a run in the fourth and fifth innings while holding the Raiders scoreless in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Okuda started the inning with a double to center field hitting two for three on the game.

Junior Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) singled to short stop putting two on the bases.

Schumacher hit a single to third base earning an RBI and the Raiders sixth run of the game.

Junior Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field) closed the game earning the save facing eight batters and striking out four.

Mount Union continues play Friday, Mar. 6 against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) at 9 am and Webster (Mo.) at 1 pm.
